Description, META Description and Keywords

Part 2: Submitting Correct URLs

Part 3: Description, META Description and Keywords

In this third part of the general submission guidelines we will analyze how you can successfully write all sorts of descriptions and choose the right keywords.

Description: A short piece of text describing what your site is about. Some directories do not allow promotional language so be sure to read carefully their submission guidelines.

The standard length of text in the description field is up to 255 chars (characters) in most countries and preferably should be written in the language of the directory. Be sure to include characters and spaces in the total measurement.

Length varies from country to country with the French directories requiring 100, 255, 300, 400, and 500 chars. The 255 chars length of description is the most common, but you can not ignore the remaining French directories which rise in considerable numbers.

In Germany there are 3 variations: 255, 300 and 500 chars, with the standard being the 255 chars.

META Description: This text is going to be read by the search engines (Google does not make any use of it). It is best to embed a couple of your keywords in the META description. Regarding the length of text, usually it is the same deal with the Description or sometimes of less chars. The text can be the same as per the Description field.

Keywords: In the keyword field you should put your second best keywords. Keep your valuable keywords for your anchor text. Directories allow from 5 to 10 keywords. Keep in mind that keywords are placed here for use by the directory visitors who enter their search terms. This is your keyword public. Clearly the use of keywords in the directories is different than that in the search engines.

Thanks for reading. Our next article will be about submitting snapshots of your websites and RSS feeds.

Submitting Correct URLs

Part 1: Choosing the right titles

Part 2: Submit Correct URLs

In this second part of the general submission guidelines we will examine what form of URLs is accepted by the directories.

URLs can be found in these forms:

  1. http://www.domain.com (Top Level Domain or TLD). You can find more info on TLDs in the post about Domains.
  2. http://www.domain.com/fr (fr for French). This form of URL is called a ‘Subpage‘ and it is common when a website is built in more than one language. Subpages are built for countless reasons also.
  3. http://www.domain.com/fr/mode  (A section or topic about mode in French). This is called a Deep Link pointing to an inner page of the site.
  4. http://www.domain.com/fr/4p0o8a_e4=?1 This is a non optimized deep link.

A large number of free directories will only accept the #1 form of URL (TLD).
A smaller number will accept the #2 form of URL.
There are some directories, called Deep Link Directories, which will accept the #3 and #4 URLs.
The difference between #3 and #4 forms of URL is evident. You need to optimize the #4 in a way that is readable by humans and more easier indexed by the search engines. If you use a CMS like WordPress or Joomla there are plugins that can do that for you.

Speaking out of experience the #2 form of URL is being accepted in almost the 75% of the directories. This depends heavily upon the way most directories have been built in a given country, and there are fluctuations. For the rest of the 25% you need to submit the TLD. Any pagerank arriving to the TLD will eventually transfer a percentage to the inner pages.

That’s about it. If you would like more analysis you can leave a message.

Choose the right title for your submissions

Part 1: Choosing the right titles

This post gives some information on choosing the right Title(s) for your submissions.

Note: This post is the first part of a small series of posts tagged as general* submission guidelines. Our intention is to cover all the details of a successful submission process.

*general: because it applies to the majority of directories, languages and countries. Things can be different for a directory e.g. Because it requires a longer description, less keywords or a certain title length. We cover all cases when you order a package so do not worry.

To maximize indexing results and avoid appearing suspicious to search engines for acquiring many links in a short time span (like the paid links that search engines dislike), you are advised to provide 1-3 alternate titles as your anchor text.

It is best that these titles are the product of some research on your industry. Depending on the industry, competition might be tough. Probably your competitors have already done their homework, meaning keyword research and keyword optimization. So, to beat the competition you should spent some time in figuring out the most suitable keywords to use as anchor text (1-3 titles) upon submitting your website.

We will give some examples here: you might be selling ‘computer batteries’ and your shop is in Brighton UK. Your titles could be ‘computer batteries Brighton’ or ‘batteries Brighton’. The first title is a long tail keyword and closer to your industry. It was a random example but these search terms give 908.000 results from Google. ‘batteries Brighton’ give 438.000 results, while ‘computer batteries’ give 33.200.000 results.

I thing the example was pretty clear. The first two titles would more suitable for your local market in Brighton.

Now, why not one title only? Sure, you could do that. But, please when ordering 600 directories do not make the submissions within 2 days. It is best to distribute the submissions in say, 2-3 weeks.

There is the issue of paid links that we mentioned earlier. No one knows how many links are allowed to be indexed from the search engines “at once”. Some say thousands of links but who can be sure of that? Every search engine has its own indexing pattern, so your links are not indexed right away. There is a safety switch here and that is the human factor. Directories may take one day to 6 months before approving your links. So, we are in the right track here. Hundreds of submissions done within 2 weeks is the choice we would recommend.
